How to Connect a Password-Protected (OAuth) Craft Docs MCP to Claude App

Step-by-step guide to connecting a private MCP server with OAuth authentication to the Claude desktop app using Craft

Overview

MCP (Model Context Protocol) servers can be configured with OAuth protection for private access. This guide shows how to connect a password-protected MCP created via Craft’s Imagine feature to the Claude desktop app.

Steps

1. Create the MCP via Imagine

Go to Craft and use the Imagine feature to create your MCP server.

2. Set Access Mode to Private

When configuring your MCP, choose “Private” as the access mode. This enables password protection.

3. Choose a Password

Set a password for your MCP. Remember this password as you’ll need it when connecting from the Claude app.

4. Add the URL to Claude App

Open the Claude desktop app and add your MCP URL as a custom connector:

  1. Go to SettingsIntegrations (or MCP Servers)
  2. Click Add Custom Connector
  3. Paste your MCP server URL

5. Activate the Connector

After adding the URL, the connector will appear as inactive. Click the “Connect” button to start the authentication flow.

6. Enter Your Password

A Craft page will open in your browser asking for the password. Enter the password you set in step 3.

7. Connector Activated

After successful authentication, the connector in the Claude app will become active. Your password-protected MCP is now connected and ready to use.

Troubleshooting

  • Connector stays inactive: Make sure you’re entering the exact password you set during MCP creation
  • Authentication page doesn’t open: Check that your browser allows popups from the Claude app
  • Connection timeout: Verify your MCP server URL is correct
